You can also get soya formula milk on prescription if your baby is intolerant to cow's milk. We had quite a battle with the GP but they agreed eventually - the cost of soya formula milk is a lot more than normal SMA gold or similar.

I got Cow&gate soya milk powder on prescription. When my DD got to the age when i started to want to introduce proper milk i.e. soya milk in cartons i asked if i could get this on prescription too and was told no, only the baby milk. So i'm paying £1.17 a litre for soya milk instead of 50p a litre for cows milk. However i was told that it was OK to give my DD cow&gate soya milk powder up until she's about 5 years old. I'm currently giving her cow&gate stuff morning and night in a bottle but proper soya milk during the day and in foods.

For some reason you still get milk tokens even if you are getting soya milk on prescription for a child. Not that i am complaining of course, more milk for the non-cows milk intollerant family members.

P.S. i have asked for some calpol on prescription today.

Calpol is just a brand name for paracetamol. You can get sugar free paracetamol syrup really cheap if the GP or Nurse/HV won't prescribe it. Don't go for calpol as you are purely paying for the name. Alternatively there is ibuprofen which can be given to most children (but check the label) and again go for the non-branded one - much cheaper and just the same. Plus ibuprofen has longer anti-fever effects than paracetamol

Wish I had to know those were available on prescription - could have saved a few pennies! Will remember that thanks.

FWIW - we went from Soya formula to Goats Milk. We found Goats Milk to be closer in taste and texture to cows milk and out little one prefers the taste. Our HV recommended that we try and wean from soya as young as possible (never really sure why but believe it has something to do with sugar levels?)

I thought id share with you how it works where I am in Leicester. Our health visitor gave me what is known as a passbook when we had my daughter. If im needing what they call the minor elements medicines (calpol, infocol, teething gel that sort of stuff) you take the passbook to the chemists, they weite in it what youve had and your given it free with lots of good advice. Here in Leicester the passbook is available to everyone who doesnt pay for percriptions. This according to my health visitor had dramatically cut down on Drs time. So much so my Drs have a new system in place. Call between 8-9 your sean before 12. Call between 1-2 and your seen the same afternoon. Its fantastic

I've also started to try this in place of soya milk. However goats milk is extorionately priced too. over a quid a carton. Also the kids say it hs a strong taste. Anyway we still get it and the are beginning to drink it OK. Good suggestion Claudie

The passbook sounds like a good idea. A regional idea though  Although i will ask my H.V. just in case.....
