Infacol & calpol free on prescription

Options
Just responded to another thread on the shop but dont drop board and thought I'd drop a line here too as more mums n dads prob read this.

Not everyone is aware that you can actually get calpol (although it's called various other names it tastes the same strawberry flavour) and Infacol on prescription for under 18's.
This saved us a fair bit with our baby. Infacol is especially expensive especially if you have a windy baby on the highest dose like we did - we could go through 2 bottles a week thats over £7!

Hope this helps save someone some pennies! ;)

my doctors wont do it asked.
  • I work as a Dispenser in a pharmacy and we see a lot of paracetamol scripts (calpol) but I think a lot of Dr's don't like prescribing most stuff you can buy over the counter, works out expensive for their practice.

My doctor wouldn't prescribe it either. I was always told to buy it.

I've always had my gp offer calpol before jabs for babies. I don't like using it much though. In two years we've used 2 little bottles and my five month old only had it with her 1st jab once & one other time when she was full of cold.

Just a little dental input here.

Always make sure you get 'sugar free' kids medicines, especially on ones that are needed regularly, or those taken at bedtime.

    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

If your GP won't prescribe it then what about your health visitor? Health visitors are allowed to prescribe *some* things. I remember my health visitor offering to give me a prescription for calpol once.

I've also been given infacol for my kids on a prescription before. I also had Colief - at £9.99 for a 5 ml bottle i was very pleased for the prescription as we were getting through 2 bottles a week!
  • I have it on repeat for both my kids - priceless!!!!
  • I work for Lloyds Pharmacy as a dispenser and i am also a father of a five (nearly six month) old boy.
The moral of the story is that if you don't ask you don't get !!
I have been very lucky and usually get anything i want on prescription although it may take a little pursuading!
The main thing is to say that you have already tried something like infacol and it has worked well and without it you are finding it really differcult.
If you make it feel like it's going to do something and it's not a waste of time you will usually win.
If not ask a different doctor at the practice!

You can also get soya formula milk on prescription if your baby is intolerant to cow's milk. We had quite a battle with the GP but they agreed eventually - the cost of soya formula milk is a lot more than normal SMA gold or similar.
