Vista & Dial Up Connection

I am using my laptop to connect to the internet in Spain, it is has Vista OS, and I have a 24/7 dial up connection. ADSL is very expensive out here 40€+ per month for about a 1g speed, and as not here permanently cannot really justify it. Speed is not my beef, but the fact I keep losing connection. I have tried various PAYG connections, and this happens with all of them. I have no failures with voice calls.

Two diffenent scenarios happen, one is the connection drops, and then it automatically redials - annoying but handleable. The second is the connection just goes from local and internet, to local only. I then have to manually disconnect and re-connect once I have realised that is the problem that I am getting no response. Sometimes it will not disconnect, and then the only option is to reboot.

Is it me? Have I got a setting wrong? Does Vista think it is too good for dial up? Please help before I either tear my hair out or throw the laptop through the window.

Thanks

You've not got anything wrong. The problem is a poor quality phone line with a lot of noise on it and its losing data. Whether or not its good for voice calls is irrelevent.

I used to do internet support for a few years when dial up was the only way to connect and agree with connor it sounds like you have a noisy line. The telephone company can check this for you and run a test. It us someimes possible for them to make it better. However I guess it'll depend on your Spanish!

Thanks guys, so if I did go the broadband route, I could still have problems? Next door have broadband no problems. Talking with them re sharing their wireless connection/costs in the future, but will not be yet (they go home until September). I can go into our local Telefonica shop - face to face is easier than phone Spanish - hand signals come in useful.

I can understand the noise breaking the connection, but not leaving it up and running on local only, as the line is still in place? or is that me just not understanding?

Talk about s*d's law last night and this morning it seems fine.
