Painting wallpaper?

I currently have wallpaper in my lounge which has a very slight texture to it along with a dado rail in the middle. Can I paint the wallpaper rather than take it off then reaplly lining paper? If so what is the best paint to use? Any help appreciated.

  • Yes! assuming the paper is in a reasonable condition, and the seems are stuck down use matt emulsion not silk, could take a few coats to cover though, depending on the type of paper.

You might notice it "bubble" when the paint wets it. The bubbles should disappear when the paint dries.

Thanks. WIll I get away with a standard matt emulsion? Would brush or roller be best over paper?

I've often painted over paper with good results - scary bubbles usually disappear when the paint dries! If you have noticeable lines at the joins in the paper, or if it has lifted slightly at the edges, it might be worth smoothing over those bits with a bit of filler on your finger to make the 'painting over paper' a bit less obvious. Sometimes it is easier to do between coats when they stand out a bit more.
