Which banks/company's don't check additional card holders?

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me/recommend any banks/credit card company's that don't perform a credit check and don't dig to deep when checking additional card holders?

I am coming to the end of my bankruptcy and as I've lived on bread and milk for a couple of years and haven't had a holiday for 7 years! my mom has (very kindly) given me some money to have a holiday and celebrate my discharge from bankruptcy.

Problem is I want to hire a car and all the hire company's want a credit card, and it would be good to have one in case a real emergency occurred. As I can't get one my mum is going to add me as a additional card holder to a new credit card (good isn't she :T ) but I don't want my poor credit past to affect her as that wouldn't be fair!

Any help would be great:D

I'm not aware that ANY credit card company checks on additional card holders. There's no legitimate reason to do so - the main card holder is fully responsible for any debts incurred, and the additional card holder is not.

As MarkyMark says above, I'm additional on a Capital One and no check was made, also Aqua.
Sure I read that Vanquis ask you to wait 6 months before you can add an additional on.

I'm not 100% certain but I think the checks made now are just to confirm a persons identity, not necessarily a full credit check.

One example is Egg. Previously they never did any checks at all for additional cardholders. But now they've removed the facility to do this online so it can only be done over the phone, they also require both the main cardholder and the new additional cardholder to be present during the phonecall.

They run through some details, speaking to both people, taking the full name, DOB and address of the new additional cardholder. They also confirm something along the lines of 'Do we have your permission to run checks to establish your identity?'... they don't state what the checks are though.

    Thank you for your replies.

My worry is I am not on the electrol roll yet as I've had to move twice in the last year, I have got a bank account and mobile phone as well as utillity bills all in my name at my address but have been there for less than three months.

Will this be a problem when doing the checks?

    Thanks again.

Additonal cardholders are also now being financially linked to the principle cardholer with credit reference agencies by certain banks.

You could get one of those prepaid credit cards instead. This way the hire car company can't take too much either. There is also a thing called the tuxedo card which Newcastle BS seem to do which seems to be geared to letting people share money in the way you wish to do with your mum. You can get either a maestro or mastercard version but it works in the same way. From reading the site it seems to infer that it is designed for people that are bad with money (!) and want to make sure they can't spend what they don't have but also wish to share with others eg children, friends etc but without the risk of having credit. It also seems to offer some basic bank account facilities as you can pay money in through bank branches, post office and paypoint terminals.

I asked LloydsTSB about whether getting an additional card holder with bad credit would affect my credit rating and they couldn't answer for certain! If the CS reps don't know then there is no hope. They definitely do identity checks as it is required under all this anti money laundering stuff.

In other circumstances yes, but most car rental firms abroad won't let you use a prepaid card or a debit card- it *must* be a credit card. Plenty of discussion re: this on the travel board as well as suggestions of certain firms in a few countries that will take a deposit not on a CC.

Kate789 is spot on with what she says the car hire company I want to use need a credit card and won't accept prepaid. I'll take your advice and check out the travel boards.

I have also heard the same as smithja that some companies are financially linking cardholders
Does anybody know who is/isn't doing this?
