i had a situation when i was off work long term sick, i received no payslips and i was over paid only a small amount each month and i did not notice it until they over paid by a large amount. when the pay clerk calculated what i had to pay them when i notified of them it was a shocking amount. they wanted me to pay back £100 per month. I could not afford that so i went to a senior manager who got it down to £60 per month and now i have finished paying it back.0

Hi TigerChick, On Monday the letter of complaint will be sent to the Payroll Manager, I shall look forward to reading his/her response although hubby expects to be 'fobbed-off' or ignored. He has just informed me that he has today already sent an email stating that on numerous ocassions he had notified them of the overpayment, and he is waiting for a reply!!!!!!!!!!!!
Opinions are like bottom holes, we all have one

Whilst I do sympathise with your plight, the employer, unfortunately has the winning argument of *You spent what you knew wasnt yours*
The best thing would have been to throw the £40 a month in a high interest savings account.
However, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I would do as others say and use yours previous calls/letters/emails to buy you more time to repay

RB - even though your hubby is no longer in the union, he could always speak to ACAS to see what they have to say.
Good luck with Payroll btw.0 -
A lesson for us all . Spending money that we know isn't ours , or that we know we will have to pay back ! The putting away in a savings account should have been the thing to do . Best you can hope for now is a repayment at same rate it was paid out .0

hubby could take out a grievance against his employer using their grievance policy, ask for a copy or it is probably on the intranet.0

I hope it's not Birmingham City Council you work for because I've heard a nasty rumour about our salaries from next April which should strike fear into anyone who works for BCC! ......
If this is to do with a pay review and potential re-gradings & salary drops, then it is all English councils.....some have completed their review, some haven't.0 -
Called job evaluation where I live up North. Wot a rip off, all in name of equality (yeah yeah) Now the 'powers that be' have reached manager levels they've decided to change the way the job is rated as " we don't want to lose professionals like architects by using the evaluation we've used on the rest of you" Charming.:eek:0

I know that some posts have refered to tax an NI contributions but I just had an thought that if you are claiming tax credits that this could also have had an adverse effect on the awards that you were entitled to. My sister works for a local council in the payroll department and has said that there has been cases of overpayment that she has later had to deal with. They have to allow you to pay it back at an affordable rate so as not to leave you in financial hardship and also that you can put in an official written complaint that has to be given consideration for your individual circumstances.Supporting the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust0
