Stuck Electricity Meter

Just noticed today my electricity meter has jammed on 8999. Could have been like this since November 2007. Have been paying estimated bills since that date. Gave the meter a tap and it started to moving on to 9000 and now working.
Intend to notify supplier of faulty meter, but concerned I may be accused of tampering, as to compound matters I am an Electrician.
Any advice welcome.

It is probably best to just be honest. Report what you discovered, that the meter obviously seems to have developed a fault, but it is running currently as it started again when you gently tapped it.
Anyone intent on tampering with a meter probably wouldn't alert the supplier it was faulty, would they?
Your supplier should arrange a new meter to be fitted asap. When it is replaced, the electrician will see there is no evidence of tampering either.
The bad news is that you will end up paying for more than 1 unit showing as consumed. The supplier will estimate what they think you probably used since it was last read. I guess they've probably already billed you once or twice based on estimated readings. You can obviously appeal any estimate they use if you consider it to be wrong, but no one is going to accept you have only used 1 unit in 6 months."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
