Fairfx.com travel money card

Has anyone seen or taken out one of these cards ? It is an offer for Matalan customers to get one of these cards ( issued by the Newcastle Building Society ) for free, instead of the usual £9.95 fee for a 3 year card. The idea being that you load the card by transfer from your debit card or bank account, buying euros or dollars at a better rate than just about anywhere else ( according to them ) then take the card on holiday with you and use it in ATM's or anywhere showing the Mastercard symbol. Is this as good as it sounds, or are there hidden charges that they haven't mentioned ?

Yes I have my card for going to France next month. Euro rate is €1.25 on card or cash purchases over £500. Under £500 they charge £6. There is a small charge for withdrawing cash at a cash machine of £1. there are no charges if you use it as a debit card.

If you take it out through the Matalan offer you don't pay the £9.95 fee.

i have just done this..The card is normally £9.95 but if you use the link below it is free. You can load it with as little as £10 at a time.

some talk on the PTS website about this card through Quidco, where it is at £7.50 cashback...apparently a poster near bottom of the thread checked it out thru quidco, but then purchased it thru matalan link, and still got the £7.50 quidco tracked.....link here....

..... so free card and hopefully £7.50 cashback...as i said, i have just done this, so i'll re post if it tracks in quidco.cheers
  • Thanks for posting this info.

I've bought one of the cards this morning, using Quidco and the Matalan link so as not to pay the fee, and it's tracked already!

I juys went into the Fairfx site via Quidco, then leaving that open, opened the Matalan link in another page and applied/paid etc.

Brilliant. I've effectively just bought £10 worth of Euros for £2.50!

    Thanks again for this.
