I could certainly do £10 per person per week. In fact I'm not far off that now and we certainly eat very well and have treats on a regular basis. My OH and I go shopping every 2 weeks and we spend roughly £50 per shop...equalling £12.50 per person per week.

Edit: Yes and I'm very proud of this too...and my family are completely amazed (I'm still working on them)

I have tried, but keep getting told, that I don't know what I'm talking about. This person is a relative and I'm afraid she's not one for helping herself. I just though if I put a few bits and pieces together a least I'd know she'd be able to eat over Christmas, and that it would be a lot healthier than what she normally eats. I know I send way too much on food and household things, but am trying to get it down as much as possible.
  • sometimes you cant tell people .10 pounds sounds ok to me to get fresh veg and meat and some bits for breakfast and lunch.

Well that's one Christmas present sorted - I think.

I have a friend who is in a wheelchair. She's vegetarian, money is in short supply and she doesn't have any family. Someone said Wilkinsons sell wicker baskets four for £2 so I'll go along and have a look. Just got to make a list of what to buy her but as I have about £12 of M&S credit thingys I'll use those as someone else suggested. She loves M&S food but isn't able to buy a lot of the time. I always buy her a Christmas pudding and a meal from there every Christmas but to be able to make up a lovely hamper I know she will appreciate this. Good fun this isn't it? :j Thanks! :)
  • thats a great idea i have sainburys points i could use to make mine a bit better .as i am doing two.

We do this for FIL he isn't poor but he doesn't have a great appetite and he doesn't treat himself much. He is 86 and we think he deserves a few little treats especially at Christmas. We buy things like individual sponge puds, little pots of custard, small pots of good jam, chutneys etc a little christmas cake, shortbread, pack of humbugs, tin of salmon etc.

If we go out shopping we pick up odd bits so it doesn't seem like a big outlay and we pack it into a nice box so he has something to open on the big day.

He always tells us off for spending too much on him but I know he appreciates it and sometimes he gets more of the things he likes.

This thread has inspired me to make a hamper for hubby's Gran.

She's about 80, lives on her own but doesn't have a fridge or freezer! (Well she does but she won't plug it in as she doesn't like electricity, so she uses it as a cupboard  )

Sweet stuff is easy but I'm struggling for long life savoury stuff. She's very old fashioned, I think I may be pushing it by including tinned salmon, so can you think of anything suitable?

So far I have the following.

    Christmas pud
    Custard (tin/tubs)
    Biscuits
    Mince Pies
    Brandy Butter
    Jam
    Carnation Milk

    Tinned Salmon
    Tinned stewed steak
    Tinned Chicken in sauce
    Tinned Jersey Royal Spuds
    Tinned Carrots
    Tinned Peas
    Tinned Soups

Tea Bags and a nice cup

    Small box chocs

    whaddya think?
Just run, run and keep on running!

Sounds good to me, how about adding a minature of Brandy in there too ? Purely for medicinal purposes of course and maybe a christmas cracker.
