brick pointing holes/gaps & crumbling bricks!?

Options
Hello,

I have a damp problem on a kitchen wall caused by a patio being built too high (see another thread!!).

I've lifted that part of the patio and am trying to dry out the wall.

On the outside of this wall parts of the pointing (inbetween the bricks) is broken and there are gaps/holes which I think is helping the water seep through.

Also some of the bricks have crumbled/are damaged - I think due to water seeping through for some time.

Can I just repair the pointing myself and pls can someone tell me the best product to use - not sure of the difference between mortar, cement, plaster etc.

Also I know it would be best to remove the crumbling bricks but I haven't got a drill capable of this so could I just patch up the crumbling bits with cement/mortar/plaster?

Finally(!), I've seen some stuff that you paint on the outside of the bricks that says it stops water getting through - has anyone used this and would it be a good idea to use on this wall? If so, must I wait for the wall to dry out fully before applying?

It's a Victorian house if that has any bearing.

Many thanks in advance.
