okey dokey
Weezl’s fool proof bread (adapted from Grant loaf)
1.5 kg bag of plain flour- 36p
fresh yeast for free from the bakers!:T
3 tsp salt - .013p (got 500g of salt from lidl for 13p!)
about 2 1/4 pts warm water made from the liquid left from boiling potatoes or soaking rice to remove starch, add gradually til you get a not too slippy dough.
Mix by hand. No need to knead.(!):D
put into 4 greased or lined loaf tins.
Leave in a warm place to rise for 40 ish mins til dough peeks above the top of the tin.
Bake for 25 mins on gas mark 6, or until browned on top and sounds hollow when tapped with a knuckle.
9p a loaf! 77 cals per slice, if you cut 15 slices per loaf.

Great, thanks a lot. How much yeast do you use? And do you need to activate it in warm water and sugar? Or do you just throw a small amount in the way it comes from the bakery? And do they mind you asking?0 -

no problem! I warm it in some of the warmed up potato water ( or make it just after I've cooked the spuds!) to activate it, and have sometimes used a teaspoon of sugar, but often not and with no bad effects!
The baker normally gives me a block of yeast which I put into icecube trays and freeze, and then use 2 cubes per 4 loaf batch.
Another variation I often do is to use a bag of asda normal wholemeal flour, just 55p and then I find I don't need potato water at all, and it's 14p a loaf! I find the wholemeal one slightly more filling, so It works out fine for us.
