Do you replace weight for weight? And, is oatmeal the same as porridge oats?
Thanks, Penny. x
Glad you asked that Penny - I am also interested in the answer as I have a bag of oatmeal close to it's best by date that needs using up (not the same as porridge oats by the way - it's much smaller, though the same thing may be acheived by wizzing porridge oats in teh food processor maybe?

Hmmm I've seen some bread rolls which have what looks like porridge oats sprinkled on the top. Perhaps....0

When I include oatmeal in my bread I tend to do 75% strong wheat flour to 25% oatmeal, but I think you could probably go up to about 60-40 without it affecting the rise too much. HTH!2015 comp wins - £370.25

Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j0 -
I use the following recipe (as advised by some kind person on here - sorry, I forget who - it is late! ;-)
375g Lidl strong bread flour (1/4 bag so 12p worth)
210 ml tepid water (free)
3/4 tsp salt (less than 1p)
1 tsp dried yeast (a couple of pence maybe?)
1 level tablespoon sugar (1p?)
dash of oil or small knob of butter (1p?)
totla cost - probably about 16 - 17p - and tastes lovely! I used to make a bigger loaf, but found this one rises well enough to make nice squareish slices, and dosnt have time to go stale!

yes you can,I wizz up value oats to make oatmeal when I need it as it's cheaper this way, oatmeal tends to be more expensive.I like to use it with wizzed up lentils to make savoury pancakes instead of using flour0 -
No it isn't porridge oats but the ground up stuff that comes in various grades -fine, medium and pinhead. I've got medium at the moment. I don't use too much -not as much as Liz545. I replace 8 oz of flour with oatmeal in a 4 lb 8 oz batch (makes 4 loaves). I might try using a bit more as Liz does. Oatmeal isn't cheap though and I think the idea of whizzing up porridge oats is a good one.Penelope_Penguin wrote: »That's interesting

Is oatmeal the same as oatbran????I have some of that and would be interested in trying it in my bread!

Erm yes twas me, I cannot lie
Here's how,
Use 1 bag value white flour 36p from tesco or asda, free yeast from asda bakery and 3 tspns salt. Yields 4 2lb loaves at 9p (altho it would be a few micropence for the salt!). You need to use potato water or rice water to increase the starch content as it's not strong flour (happy to say more about this if you like;)) But it genuinely is 9p a loaf for 4 loaves, come round for a slice an I'll show ya! Recipe available if anyone wants
