Getting connected to gas

My mother in law doesn't have gas in her house, just a dirty great big oil tank. The oil tank is needing to be replaced, and she has had the offer of a gas cooker, and the gas conversion of her ray burner, so I am looking to see how much it would cost to get gas connected.
Her house is down a lane fairly centrally to a town, and her neighbours all seem to have gas, her neighbour further down the lane had her gas put in a year ago (although they aren't on speaking terms so can't find out any details from her!!!)
Can anyone give a rough idea as to how much gas connection will cost and who I need to contact to find out more, is it Transco or is it the local gas supplier or BG?
Thanks

Just about the time of deregulation I tried to get gas installed - everyone pointed to everyone else. I gave up
Since then I think they have their act together and its TRANSCO's job - I'd be interested to hear how much they quoteTANSTAAFL !0 -
i would say way over £1000 may be £3000 - £4000

Thank you for your replies.
I contacted Transco today, and got the typical, 'I'll send you a pack'!!!
I asked for more detail of the pack and was given a telephone number of the local people who would do the gas installation.
I spoke with them, they too will send out a pack!!! And that is just in order to complete a form to say where on the building outside you fancy having the meter placed and then I have to send it back and they will then tell me how much it will cost!!
Don't you love red tape!!!
Thanks again0 -
My son had gas installed a few months ago & I think it was only £270 but it was less than a meter or so to the connection.I think the further they have to run the pipe the dearer it is but I don`t know how much.0

She lives in Cornwall. I was given the number for Wales and the West.
