Broken Seagate drive - how to return it without returning any data on it..?

My Seagate Freeagent harddrive has died - won't even power up now :( I bought it 4 months ago from Amazon - so want my money back... However, I'd like to be sure that my data is securely wiped (nothing dramatic, but wouldn't want a stranger to have my pictures etc). Do I have any rights to a refund without returning the…

Doubt the technician would. However, if the hard drive is refurbed and sent to another customer without being properly wiped, files etc would be easily accessible. It's seen as good practice now to securely erase drives before passing them on - I'd like confirmation that this will happen if the drive is reused... I don't think this is unreasonable.
