    IMHO

Ist drill needs to be a corded drill , not a cordless :D

You are only limited by your budget. See what is on special offer at any of the well known outlets, BQ/argos/ focus/ screwfix etc etc.
Go for a well known make e.g bosch etc .

2nd drill is then a cordless

3rd , my latest toy a lightweight lithium

    :T
If you want to suggest a budget? would give an opinion

I agree that you definitely need a corded drill first before you consider cordless.

If you're on a tight budget I find the Wickes own-brand power tools are pretty good - I've been using a Wickes drill for a couple of years. Better than most own-brand tools IMHO.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Just looked at the Argos catalogue
Price to beat is £39.99 for a 650 w Bosch hammer drill
    A good first drill ???
agree that wickes are good, infact most drills on sale today do the job.

My latest cordless is a Worx .
I also like keyless chucks but can be fussy as already ( dont tell the wife) too many diy toys.

Agree with above, you just don't get the power with a cordless drill.
I'd completely recommend an SDS drill rather than one with a chuck key as I believe they have much more strength in them.

I've got what was the cheapest SDS drill in Argos (their own make, but can't quite remember what it's branded) and am vrey happy with it. I don't use it much (me and DIY don't go together) but the walls in this house are rediculously hard to go through [broke my JCB keyed drill within months of moving in] and this one does the business.

[Edit: It's branded "Challenge" and is £34.99 in Argos. 711/0247]

If you're going to use it lots I'd agree with a Bosch. So would the bloke who runs the tool hire shop around the corner from me.

I agree - you need a good corded drill first. I've always had Bosch Green (DIY standard as opposed to Bosch Blue - Pro standard) and have had good service from them. Parts are also readily available if you need a new chuck, for example. Paid about £70 for my last one but think it is money worth spending. Akternatively buy a cheap own brand / non brand and chuck out after a couple of years when it goes wrong.

I would also recommend a spell check

  • SDS is much better for drilling masonry.

I have recommended this drill in the past and it is a bargain at £55 delivered free-

A Bosch one should give you years of trouble free use ;)
