Income & Benefits

Hi Everyone,

Due to the rise in domestic bills & everything in general, I have to contemplate renting out my garage locally. Unfortunately I am on long term Income Support/Incapacity benefit and would like to be made aware of any threshold of earnings before it would damage my entitlement to benefits. I've tried contacting the CAB who were helpful but didn't connect with this point. I am reluctant to contact JobCentre plus or DWP as I continue to have administration problems with them. Can anyone help & advise? Thanks.

The earnings disregards are between £5 and £20 per week, in your case it would be £20. As you are not doing any work here, I think it would count as unearned income and you would lose benefit £ for £ from your income support.

I agree, £20 per week. You could class it as earned income through maintaining the garage though

Can someone please explain to me the difference of earned and unearned income in relation to its affect on income support? Thanks.

As healy says, between £5-20pw of earned income (doing some work) is disregarded for IS, anything over affects IS. Uneanred income (such as rental income) is not ignored and affects the IS £ for £.

And just to add, it's not you who would decide if it's classed as earned or unearned, it the benefit decision maker.

And to be honest I think you've no chance of it being classed as earned. Sorry.
