How do you work out MPG

ok, blond moment here........

I record the litres of fuel into the car
I record the miles between fill ups

Anything else and how do i work it out

I gallon = 4.54 Litres so fill up car, drive it then fill up again and note how many litres filled it and how many miles you did. Divide number of litres by 4.54 to get gallons, divide mileage by gallons to get MPG.

Or for an even easier method sell you car and buy one with a trip computer! Not very MSE though
