Cleaning Laptop

Hi

We recently brought a laptop and was wondering what people recommend we clean it with.

It gets dusty easily and there a fingermarks on the top.

Also the screen needs a clean.

Any ideas...don't what to wreck it and new to this techie stuff.

Maplin or pc world will be your best port of call to buy in shops. For the screen you can get special cleaners and I wouldnt recommend using something not specified for LCD/TFT use. Dont apply too much pressure or you will rupture it. For the keyboard and such you can use a gentle hoover or buy compressed air to use. (otherwise known as an air duster). For the plastic outer housing you can use a foam cleaner which you can buy from maplin or pc world to. If you need to clean any contacts or the DVD/CD lens I would suggest using only IPA (Isopro Alchohol) on a cotton bud.

    The foam:-

you can most likely get all these items for far less on ebay. I would recommend trying to stick to the proper solutions when cleaning a laptop though they arent as robust as a desktop.

As for screen cleaning, if it's covered in fingerprints you can buy a tub of screen wipes from most PC shops for a fiver or so, But keep a glasses cleaning cloth handy to wipe away any dust on the screen and keyboard.

I use a damp cloth (wring it out ) and wipe the screen and give it a once over with an old chamoises cloth. that gets rid of most of the dust and dirt..

But if you want to clean out the inside you can but a can of compresses air to blow into the vents and fans to blow the dust away (DON'T use a hoover!!! that's bad for laptops and computers in general!!)

If you need IPA got to your chemist (probabbly an old fashioned one) and ask. I had to buy 1L recently just to clean some tape heads, it cost me £1.50 !

I use a hoover to clean dirt out from between the keys and a wipe to clean the surface, i did however get it proffesionally cleaned inside out from a specilsit PC shop

I don't recommend baby wipes for cleaning plastics at all. My daughter wiped her plastic fish tank once and it left 'cloudy' areas which we can't remove at all. Definitely wouldn't use on a laptop! Microfibre cloth, slightly damp is all that's needed. (Lidl's are about the best) Use very lightly.

I have, on both a laptop and a TFT Monitor.

No problems at all but I do wipe them dry with kitchen roll afterwards.

Note to the stupid - Do not use scented babywipes, they won't make your laptop smell any nocer
