I totally agree. The normal high street chain optometrists only seem able to cater for 'simple' prescriptions. I'm -9.5 & -10 and have now tried 2 of these only to be sent packing with a refund after many failed attempts to get the lenses right. My advice is to ask around and find a reputable independent who you can trust. By the way, I have to get the 1.9 index glass lenses by Zeiss - these are the only ones which consistently get it right for me. Just been quoted £400 for the lenses alone!

I suppose that's my point. There's a lot to go wrong even face to face (but of course that depends exactly who with and where). The likely hood of a satisfactory result online is even more remote!

I agree about Zeiss - The only times I have been happy with my glasses have been when I have used the 1.9 index glass lenses by Zeiss but again it was when I had also found an independent opticians (now changed staff and not so good) who knew the right advice to give about frames etc. On my last two visits to an opticians when I needed varifocals, they advised me to use Essilor Varilux (because I think they said that Zeiss do not do the 1.9 in varifocals) but I can't say that I am too happy with them and they don't seem that much cheaper either.

Im slightly ot on this thread due to having prisms in both eyes, but 2 high street opticians both screwed up my prescriptions last year. I never really bothered with independant opticians before, but am going to start doing so this year. There may be some out there who will beg to differ, but i agree with AlphaCore that high street retailers are only trained to cater for small scripts.

I had also been told it was impossible to have thin lenses made in my presciption but i took a chance once with an online firm based in the north-west, and i had my first ever pair of rimless lightweight lenses. They were great but i wouldn't take that chance again. I usually wear Nana Mouskouri style glasses though, to hide the fact that my lenses are inch-thick.

Can I ask why laser surgery would not improve the eyesight in the case of high prescriptions.

OH considering having surgery (he's about +4) and has been told his distance vision will improve but he will still need reading glasses but at a much lower strength than he does now.

I had an appointment this morning and my prescription is

    right -14.25
    left - 9.75

The optician said that as my prescription had been stable for the last 3 years i would be an ideal candidate for laser surgery.

I would like to hear of anybody on here who has had it. She said after the procedure my sight would be like it is now without glasses though. Or near to it.

Is it really that much of an improvement ?

Ill add also that i instigated the conversation and at no point was i offered to buy it. So i would like to think she was not suggestive selling so to speak.

    Batty

i recieved 176.90 voucher this morning towards the cost of my specs.

I picked out an £85 pair of frames and the ultra light and thin lenses for another £110 so when i got to the checkout i ended up paying £16 which i was very happy about.:j

Yes my last ones were Zeiss £404 but the frames were free. But my health scheme would only pay £120 of that despite me having paid £20 a month into the scheme for the past 17 years! (I really don't know why I joined:confused: )
