You put a feather duvet in a washing machine:eek:

You might have made the dust problem worse now. The material is coated on the inside to prevent the dust from the feathers passing through the fabric. Washing it can destroy the coating.

I don't seem to have a dust/mite allergy but it was a couple of years old, apart from needing a clean was good otherwise. I thought it was worth a try instead of binning it. I think it did have a washing instructions tag on it. It seems fine and much fresher now.
I heard that duvets should be washed every 6 months or so to remove sweat, dead skin and dust mites.

I thought they had to be cleaned by specialists (some sort of dry cleaning), but I may be wrong.

Apparently bedding needs to be washed at 60 degrees in order to kill dustmites.

Alternatively, bedding can be put in the freezer for 24 hours. That is OK if you have a large freezer (ours is only 2 drawers).

Many manufacturers advertise non-allergenic bedding - but is is only washable at 40 degrees.

My idea mattress protector would be 100% cotton (for 'coolness') - including the backing - that can be washed at 60 degrees. I've seen some on the John Lewis website that can be washed at 95 degrees, but they cost a fortune!

Meanwhile, I am still looking for the perfect mattress!
Thank you Tim for all your advice, but I prefer to try a mattress before I buy as I am particularly fussy!!!!
  • I just signed up after researching my horrible sleep and it lead me to this forum. Heres' my story, in a nut shell ; ). I had - old mattress, cheap duvet, and 300 thread sheets. I woke up with a back ache every day. So I got a new mattress and mattress protector (one side is kinda plasticish - waterproof). then I slept great. Now I bought a Clavin Clien comforter (synthetic). The week I slept ok. The last 5 days I keep waking up like 2x a night covered in sweat. COVERED. I'm going crazy and thought that I should look it up.

What I figure : It has gotten colder the last week here and it has forced me under the covers. With the advertised WARMEST, synthetic comforter (from macy's), and the waterproof mattress protector, I'm baking like a turkey in my bed. Maybe I just invented the latest weightloss method. Now this is just based off my research. Can it be?
