Hi My son wants some RR shares for his birthday, he is over 18 so they can be bought in his name, can someone tell me the best and easiest way to go about this, as we have never bought shares before! Thanks.

You can buy shares via a dealing account. Selftrade are often recommended on this forum for shares due to their charging structure. I use them and am happy with them.
They charge a flat fee of £12.50 per trade (+ stamp duty). They hold the shares as a nominee account, so you don't get the certificates, but can monitor the prices etc. easily via their web site.
Halifax do a similar thing. For the amounts I deal in, the charge is slightly lower (11.95), but their interface isn't so comprehensive regarding automatic trades such as stop losses etc.
Selftrade did have a referral scheme when I joined whch mitigated some of the initial trading costs. If you went this route have a look at the referral boards to see if it's still running.
I think it's a great idea to get your son involved, and could be an interesting learning process if he treats it as such. It might be worthwhile having a look at some of the discussion boards regarding his chosen share (maybe before buying!).
There's one below at the Motley Fool. (Registration might be needed?)
