Chat Forum Board Modifications

Hello, I have noticed recently a lot of requests and suggestions concerning boardmods for the Chat Forums.

If you would like to see any boardmods, or have any suggestions for useful modifications, please post them here so I can refer them to Webby and Martin to see if they feel they are appropriate.

Please bear in mind that a forum upgrade will be happening at some point, so the boardmods would need to be compatible with YaBB 1 Gold SP 1.3.2.

Cheers,

I hate the "Notify of Replys" system

You have to click "Notify of replies", then you have to confirm it on the next screen

If you want to check if you've added a thread to your list or remove one, you have to look you notifications list which seems to be in no particular order (and mine is getting very long)

I like sites that have "watch this topic" at the bottom of each page. When you click you're watching it straight away.
From then on when you go to that thead it says at the bottom "you are watching this topic - click here to stop watching" or something similar :)

Summary cutter would stop the threadsplitting for modem users, and be ggod in general for the server.

With exchange rates the way they are I still think you should consider the $85 for vB and move to a DB driven forum.

    That's in vB too ;)

loafer: vBulletin is a good solution, I have personally recommended it to Brendan since I've used it myself (used to rent a license). I'll add it to my list of "Forum software to evaluate"

  • I thought that an upgrade was in process..

SMF is the new version of yabbse (the php/mysql version of yabb) This may offer the path of least resistance as direct 1.3 yabb importers don't exist for vB (yabb > yabbse > vB appears to be the way many do it.)

SMF is pretty good, easily moddable, adaptable, etc etc :) Used it for a voluntary security research org. that I run (offline atm :P)

Tis on meh list of "good forums" :) nBB (Nefarious Bulletin Board) is pretty ok to for adaptability and moddability, however its pretty basic, and doesn't do patches/ports from YaBB :(

I'm a vB fan - million posts and 20k members on a single server with a lovely selection of templates, and it's low admin too.

IMHO only 3 cut the mustard
    IPB, vB and phpbb.

vB wins hands down though because of it's user config options and it's tidy templates. (Let alone the Arcade mod ;) )

I can only say one thing about phpbb: "filthy". :)

phpBB has some pretty big holes (I know because I trashed my own forums whilst experimenting with these holes ;))

SMF would probably be the best option - its the follow on from YaBB SE (the php version of YaBB Gold). I like it - plus it uses mod_rewrite by default... which just rules tbh :)

Note: Sorry, I'm obsessed with mod_rewrite :D it's pretty funny being able to throw people off by using urls that aren't the actual script location :) (most my work is placed outside the web viewable directory anyway :P)

re: mod_rewrite Me too (look at the sig ;)), but you have to be aware that it does have an overhead.

Does SMF do mod_gzip without hacking?

BTW just added you on AIM, say hi when your online :)
