Mine vanished too and I'm running vista.
I tried to use start - search and type in recylcy bin and it couldn't find it.
I hit ctrl+windows key and manually searched for it. It wasn't difficult to find as it is in a file of its own called "recycle bin".John

in vista try this:-
1) Right click the Vista Desktop
2) Click on Personalize
3) Select: 'Change desktop icons'
4) At the Desktop Icon Settings, place a tick next to: 'Recycle Bin'
