Password Manager

Hi,

I am now fed up of trying to remember at least 20 different passwords for various websites/programmes I use (including Internet Banking). I have seen a few free password managers advertised online, but am not sure of their safety.

Can anyone reccommend a password manager (preferably free) that is secure and trustworthy? I'm especially cautious because of the internet banking. If you can't reccommend one, could anyone at least tell me the sort of things I should be considering before I commit my life to one (ie - encryption levels etc)?!?!

I would be very nervous of such a thing as it would be a prime target for hackers, trojans etc... who want to steal your password information. All they would need to do is get access to this one program...and bam...that's your life opened up to them.

Hi it's best not record your passwords on your pc due to obvious reasons. If you got a half desent smart phone i.e nokia or sony etc they usally have passwords managers. I use my password manager on my nokia 6230 it uses a inital password to get into my password area it encrypts and decrypts passwords when stored on the phone.
  • Forgot to mention that I have about 1000 passwords and security information that I store on this small program. I use extra security precautions of keeping a USB key disk for the MASTER password (very handy)... WindowsXP has also started using that very recetly.

It has AES + Twofish algoriths (Check internet to see how secure it is... I think Barclays uses the same security algorithm but I may be wrong. Check it yourself)
  • Saw this link http://www.anypassword.com/

    on http://100-downloads.com/

Not sure if it is any good or not, maybe it is what your after.

    Note:

The 100 dowloads site is pretty good for some other good bits n bobs for your PC.

    Hope this helps

Rather than making a series of passwords for each and every account I have, I find it easier to remember one password and encrypt it slightly in my mind so it corresponds to whichever account I am logging in to. Means you only need to remember one word, and just re-create each password using say the URL of the account you're logging in to. :)

I have been using "Roboform" for ages to manage my passwords and other personal data. It will populate webpages with name & address, dob, credit card blah, blah, blah. After using a "trial" version for an extended period, I registered (and paid) when the £ reached nearly $2.00.

The main additional advantage of this software is that you can get Pocket PC and USB key versions too to ensure you always have the data to hand - and the USB key version will work on any computer that you are "guesting" on.

You may find it useful too:

I find a little black book does the trick and can be hidden away in a draw when not in use.

I've been using Any Password for ages and find it a great help. <otherwise I'd never remember everything!> And it's free! But I don't put internet banking stuff in it. It has an easy tree system similar to explorer - you can have folders such as 'shopping', 'auctions', with passwords within each folder.
