 AVG fine last night, switched computer on today - have red exclamation mark as e-mail scanner inactive. When control screen for AVG first comes up - no probs as I get green arrow for all ok, then it changes to email problem. Any help appreciated as totally confused. (Have not changed any configurations).

Which version of AVG are you running? No updates will be issued for AVG 7.5 after 31.05.08 If you have this version it may just be that it is warning you that the virus database is out of date.0
