Wow, so glad this got moved - the continuing response is phenomenal. Thanks guys
I must say that I woke up to a PM mentioning the MX-5, having not given it any previous thought before but now hearing so many people suggesting it I am now starting to read up on it. I hate to sound like a girl but on first impression only it does look very CUTE and uber sexy which is very important to me!
I have been thinking of what has been said about insurance as well and I think that is one thing I wasn't seriously taking into consideration before. I have gone past 4 A3 and 1 TT today so almost feel like the world is conspiring against my better judgement.
I am now officially ruling out the TT, it is just not practical on any level as a first car. I live in London and mainly use the tube & train for work but when I do nights I have no choice but to use a cab which cost close to £300pm. I also have friends that live at the other end of the country so want to be able to go see them without relying on trains.
So I think the NEW question now is Audi A3 or MX-5??
p.s what do you guys think of car auctions?DEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0 -
I have no experience on auctions so will let others advise u on that.
Ok as I previously stated that I think the audi a3 look dated for your price where as the mx5 from 1998 I think still look very smart and sexy as u described itPre 1998 I wouldn't recommend as they look dated with the pop-up lights, even though they are still very good cars. One thing to note is the boot is small so the conventional car - a3 will have a much larger boot.
I must confess, I always thought the mx5 as a girly car because of its looks but they drive superbly well. Test drive one and I think u will fall in love with it. The 1.6 is fine, if u are a bit more adventurous then go for the 1.8 - of course insurance and petrol will be more for the 1.8.
I have no experience on the audi a3, but am aware they are good cars - you should test drive this too. I would say test drive this first before u test drive the mx5, my reason being that if you try the mx5 first u will want that car only and not even bother trying the a3, I'm pretty confident on that.
So test drive them both and u will know exactly why I'm so convince you u want the mx5. Goodluck with searching whatever u decide.0 -
Both cars would be hard to find in auction, the A3 is slightly more common but be prepared to travel When looking at auction always ask yourself why is the car there. Is there something to hide or is it genuine. Try and attend a few auctions before buying, stand towards the back so you can see the way the auctioneer and punters work. Look for the auctioneer taking prices off the wall to get the bidding going. Hold your nerve and dont come in early, wait until the prices start to slow before raising your arm. Arrive early and inspect the car before others do (you can raise interest in a car if you seem over keen as the car drives in), check the paperwork in the office and look in the glovebox for any further paperwork that may have not been mentioned.
It is a bit of a minefield - some you win and some you lose in my experience.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

MGF and a good warranty, or an MX-5. Head gaskets a major problem on the MGF, but its fixable now.Why go for an audi a3? If its vw group you really want, why not go for the skoda octavia? Same mechanicals and cheaper."In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act. "

I'v e had one, a '96 1.6 Monza, it was good and there is no denying it but to me the interior and image isnt everyone's taste unfortunately. My comment was more that I was surprised you hadnt seen the post and mentioned it already.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!
