Hi,
A neighbour has asked me for some help with their laptop internet connection. Basically for a while now they have not been able to view any webpages. The network connection esablishes fine but when you click on IE you get the message that the webpage cannot be displayed.
It is an Acer laptop using windows vista. the broadband connection is setup as wireless and was working ok untill the problems started.
I have to date tried..
If anyone has any other ideas that i could try i (and my neighbour) would be extremely grateful.
Thanks
Rob

I have to date tried..
- connecting via my own broadband (both wireless and lan cable)
- restored the laptop to an earlier save point
- reset IE
- tried IE in safe mode (no add ons etc)
- installed and tried firefox
- checked for viruses etc
- tried without any firewalls etc running
If anyone has any other ideas that i could try i (and my neighbour) would be extremely grateful.
Thanks
Rob

i have tried a totally different broadband router (mine), and used it with my laptop, while my neighbours was still saying it could not connect to the internet.
The broadband connection establishes fine the problem is just when you try and open up an internet browser.0 -
have you tried their machine on your network?
have you tried manually adding a different DNS server into the properties, a free one, that is good is 4.2.2.1 as it could be DNS routing issue with their ISP...0 -

How far does a Trace Route go?
E.g. tracert www.yahoo.co.uk in a command line0 -
Ok something silly that happened to mum's ACER there is a little slide button on the laptop for the wireless link (on mum's it is on the front edge on the left of the laptop) this was moved so she couldn't connect to the internet give it a try it might work? once it was in the right place the internet poped straight up.

Try typing sfc /scannow in the run box, you might need the installation disc to check if windows files are ok.0

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I will try out the suggestions asap and let you know how it goes...0

thank you everyone for your help so far...
to answer the questions
Markymoo - i have tried it on my network, still doesnt work. Where do i change the DNS?
Nickmack - a traceroute goes all the way to yahoo (obviously via a number of hops)
Nikiyoung - i cant find a slide switch for the wireless, but i know the wireless is connecting to the router as i can log onto the router. so i believe the wireless is working ok just the internet browser seems to be failing.
Glosman555- i dont have the installation disc, what does that command do??
Once again thanks to everyone for your replies (i will click thanks to everyone on resolution ;-) )0 -
