one way round it.. (and i'm apologizing already, but it is just one of THEM days in the office) is to drive back!

    woohoo.. problem solved!

you could try searching with many different car hire companies, to find who charge the lowest one way rental fee..

Route 66 itself is just one long gift shop arcade and I found it difficult to negotiate, ending up just going back to the nearest freeway going in the same direction.
There are plenty of good sights to see in the general area of the route from The Gateway Arch in St. Louis and Meramec Caverns nearby through to The Grand Canyon at the other end. It all depends how far you are willing to travel away from your main route.

$500 is not that bad at all for such an iconic trip they do have to get it back, get yourself a drop top mustang from Hertz and go for it. We had one this March and the new model is superb, it will really add to the trip (but I am a car nut :D )
I am assuming that you are not averse to leaving the route as it does not go to Vegas so there will be lots to see, have a look here http://www.historic66.com/
for a few ideas inc message board. It really is a case of what would you like to see, there's not much you cant find in the US.
