I used to until a fireman friend of mine told me some horror stories! My WM has a timer on it so I now set it to come on just as I'm about to come home (cos I always forget to switch it on WHEN I get home) lol.

    Miss u sweetie...
  • Oh dear, I do that too. Now i'm worried about my house burning down! I had never thought of that before so thanks for pointing it out, I will think twice about leaving the washer on if i'm going out now.
  • Well, I'm not going to worry about appliances setting on fire. There will always be any sort of appliance or machine that can set fires and if I were to worry about them, all the time, then I'd never be worry free. I leave my DW, WM and Drier on when I'm out, also my BM and slow cooker - although not all at the same time :D I take sensible fire precautions and have smoke detectors all over the place so if a fire starts when I'm in, I can get out. If I'm out, then I won't get hurt.

Oh and on the same note, if ya want something else to worry about - I was once being driven along (luckily very slowly) when smoke started pouring out from under the dashboard and the wiring loom burst into flames. We piled out and no-one was hurt. And yes, I still drive AND listen to the radio at the same time.

Oh, also, don't leave your chargers plugged in and switched on when you're not charging. Apparently they can overheat badly and cause fires too.

Oh well, off to remove my 2nd loaf from BM shortly. Wouldn't be without mine now.

Not just fires. If your machine bursts a pipe it can permanently try to fill itself... all over your kitchen floor. I know that some modern machines have timers that stop the water if it hasn't filled in a given time, but not all, and anyway - that's still a lot of water.

  • But at least you'd have clean floors, Squeaky :D:D

And mine would have to flood some - it's in the garage which isn't connected to the downstairs of the house :)

:) Yeah, right. There's always one smarty pants! :p

Aye, clean kitchen floors and soaking wet cupboards... any carpets on the same floor level... skirtings, plaster...

..if you've ever spilt a pint of milk on the floor and seen how far it spreads - just image a couple of hundred pints... doesn't bear thinking about. Not, he sez, pandering to Miss Smarty Pants, that I ever fill my washing machine with milk!

These incidents are tragic but hopefully rare. My BM and dishy are timed to come on a hour before I get up and the washer is in a 'wet area' attached to the house. I'm more paranoid about gas. I cook with leccy and will not have any gas fires. The only gas appliance we have is the boiler which I can live with as I have had it installed in an outhouse which the killer fumes won't get me;) As I often say to Mrs MATH "I don't want to wake up and find I've been killed in the night!":D - she thinks I'm mad too.

I do leave them on while I go out and I also let them run over-night:o

My washing machine runs overnight too on E7. If I'm up late enough I'll set it going myself but otherwise it has a built in timer to delay switching on for 3, 9 or 12 hours and I use this often so I'm almost always asleep while it's on :o
