No 'No Claims Discount'

Hi

I have been putting my son on my insurance policy as a named driver and think that he ought to start building up his own NCD. I found that Yes Insurance was a good rate for me, so then I tried it in my son's name, and it came up with a figure of about £500. Then I tried it in my son's name but with me as the main driver, which I am, and it came down to £267.
Are there any pitfalls in doing this. He will be building up his NCD and then, when he is the main driver, he will have a better discount.

Thanks
Jackie

You start to lose your own entitlement to NCD - takes a while to lose it completely, so not a major worry.

If a claim occurs - say the car is written off - your son would be the claimant - and the recipient of any cheque - but questions might then be asked as to why he was insuring a car he didn't own.

If you caused a claim, or say it is a hit and run type accident - your son loses his NCD.

These are just initial thoughts that occur off the top of my head. Appreciate fully what you are trying to do - find an answer to a problem every young driver faces - I am just not convinced it is the right answer..

Thanks for your reply *MF*. I am using all my discount on my other car, so I have no NCD on this one. It sounds a bit complicated so I think I'll just insure it as normal with my son as a named driver. He can worry about his insurance when he gets his old VW Beetle on the road.

    Thanks again

There was a post on here just recently which said (I am 99% sure) that there was an Insurer who would match one car's NCD with a similar amount for a second car even if you didn't have an NCD for that second car - which might help YOU with the overall financial position for later on - when your son comes to insure in his own name.

I had a quick search - but couldn't find it, and sorry have to go - maybe another member will remember - and it might help just on the money saving side.
