Hi Can anybody help me out. Just installed XP Home sp2 on my friends PC for him and Media Player wont play DVD's. It comes up with a message that a compatible DVD decoder is not installed. I have looked on the internet but Microsoft want you to pay for it and the others all seem to be 30 day trials.
He has Media Player 9 by the way, and NO access to the internet at present so I will have to download it and transfer from PC to PC which does not help, but thats how it is at the moment.
Can anyone come up with a free one. I am sure I have managed to sort this one out in the past, but I am getting no where fast this time.
Any help appreciated.

Just installing an MPEG codec should do the job.
Here trying this one :

Hi dalepearson, thanks for that, but it keeps coming up with
Loadlibrary("clvsd.ax") failed - the specified module could not be found
am I doing something wrong. I see several files and click on the install file.
Help, please.0 -
It sounds like you didnt extract all the files before running the install file.
Drag the folder onto your desktop, then run the install file.
Hope this helps.0 -
Right sorted that bit out and it did install in the end so cheers for that but now have new problem, media player just runs through the chapter list on the right displaying little exclamation marks as it quickly goes through them.
It says right click on the item to check the error message. The error message says "the pin cannot use the supplied media type" and I have tried different bought DVD's. Help please.0 -
If all you want is to play normal DVD's simply perhaps a different DVD software package might be a simple route
a quick google came up with http://www.cliprex.com/ with some options
although have you looked in windows to see if you have one already ( like winDVD) try - Start - all programs ( perhaps then listed or in accessories)
If you really need it under WMP , perhaps go to mircosoft and download ver 10
and if need be look at codecs on the same site or googleAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -

In order to play DVD-Video discs on a PC, you need to install a third-party software decoder. You can either buy one from a software retailer, or purchase a plugin for Windows Media Player 10.
Alternatively, download and install Media Player Classic. It's free.0 -
I would ditch media player its far to resource hungry application typical M$. Zoom player is all you need however media player classic is also good.

Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility is an easy way to check your system. Download here.
