I have a clio dynamique 16v. I have only been driving 2 years and it's a really nice car to drive. Very smooth etc. The only thing i found when i first got it is that it's very 'nippy' at pulling off and that took some getting used to  . It's a nice looking car as well and has plenty of room inside. The only thing i hate about it is the annoying rattle of the sunroof but renault say mine hasn't got a problem  .

Though, one thing to watch out is that on the 1.2 models, the TDC (top dead centre) sensor can failure causing a missfire, intermittent starting. The AA can diagnose it, but can be replaced easily by a competent DIY person.

Other failures can be the coil pack. But apart from that, the engine bay is empty..

This is why i moved onto the 2.0 Clio 182..

As per the above, I can only speak from experience and the are two Renaults' in my immediately family. My dad has a Magane, which he has had from new and in those three years it has now had 8 new coil packs fitted (all of them replaced twice!!).

My mother in law bought a 4 year old Clio 1.4 16v in Feb, with just 3000 miles on the clock - 4 coils in 4 months!!! As bad luck would have it, the latest one was this morning and they are £30 to £40 a pop and that's if you fit it yourself.

It certainly seems to be a Renault problem and if you google it, you'll probably find it is a very common Renault problem judging by the number of Renault owns with similar experiences to the above.

I certainly would buy one on the grounds of what I've witnessed.

That's interesting, the gfs does the same...have to drive with it open a notch to shut it up...

Clio 1.2 16v all the way..

The 8v clio is just damn too slow. Drive it, you will see.

Go with the Clio 1.2, 16v Expression or Dynamique.

You will get, fog lights, electric windows, central locking, alloys (dynamique only), colour coded bumper (dynamique). Electric mirrors, rear headrests, wheel trims (expression) and more..

The 8v, you dont get rear headrests, really bad interior, no central locking or electric windows, no electric mirrors, and no colour coding of the car.

For not alot more insurance, you get alot more of a car.

Just a real bad poor persons car..
With your first car you're usually just happy that it moves. Most of the extras are of no real use. I'd actually prefer a "honest" supermini without all the tat in it.
    Happy chappy

I fixed the squeak by lifting out the glass and using vasalene on the seal, then refitting it - works a treat - almost toatally rattle free.

The Clio is a superb car, I had a 1.2 Grande (2000 w reg) from new for 3 years and then sold it to my friend who still has it, they are good on fuel and insurance and well planted at motorway speeds. It also had automatic central locking when you drove off (hold the lock button down to activate it) which is a good safety feature for a young girl driving alone. And steering wheel audio controls, all on the bottom model. If I was looking for another small car I would not hesitate to get a clio.
