I’d left the door for ages and I was finally going to get someone out to fix, but in a last attempt to sort it my self I used a crow-bar to just push the door sideways a bit towards the hinges and now its free!

There was lots of dirt/grit that appears may have fallen down the locking mechanism and just made it very stiff to engage/disengage the top half of the runner.

So I’ve cleaned it off a bit and it now opens/shuts/locks but it still doesn’t feel quite right. It’s not as smooth as it used to be.

Does anyone know if the whole locking mechanism down the side of the door can be removed and cleaned easily?

It appears to be just fixed on with a few screws so I might try to strip it down and clean/oil it.

Can anyone recommend a good website with useful diagrams/tips for this type of stuff?

    Thanks,
  • Hi,first time poster here but i am a joiner with a lot of experience of upvc. You can remove all the screws and the whole mechanism will come out but you will need to remove the handle as well to achieve this. Then the lock barrel itself will need to be removed which is held in place with a screw in the locking edge of the door. After removing said screw, you will need to insert door key and turn it about a quarter of a turn to align the locking pin with the escape slot. All sounds complicated i know but i am sure you will figure it out.It sounds to me like the locking mechanism is worn out and you may need a new one.It may also be that the mechanism has worked loose and just needs cleaning and re-aligning.Good luck with it.

  • My key is broken in my PVC door and the door is locked with the 4 additional bolts up.

If a locksmith can't get the broken key out, does anyone know if I will not only have to replace the lock near the keyhole but also the whole lock mechanism including the bolts?
  • The lock can be removed and it doesn't have any bearing on the rest of the mechanism. All the lock does is stop the handle from turning which in turn stops all the deadlocks from disengaging.
  • I am a locksmith and I can assure you you won't have to replace the mechanism!!! It depends how far the key is broken in the barrell but sometimes you can get lucky with some wd-40 and a paper clip. If you spray into the barrell first to make things easier the gently slide the paper clip past the bottom of the key and drag it back towards you. I obviously have a special tool for this but at least give it a go yourself before calling a locksmith!!!
