A paypal transaction will be classed as a regular purchase, unless Sainsburys are different than every other credit card company I know.

But... paypal charge a fee to the person who is receiving the money which wouldn't really make it worthwhile. I can't be anymore specific about the fees unfortunately as Paypal don't make it easy to find them out. It all depends what type of account you have and the fees are only accessible once you've actually logged into your account... they don't show a simple table in their 'Help' section.

Just a note about withdrawing cash from an ATM. Don't forget that there's likely to be a limit on the amount that can be withdrawn each day.

The limit is usually around £500 on a credit card, with the limit reset at midnight. So, your friend may have to make a few trips to an ATM over a period of a few days. The exact limit can vary from card to card though.

Some cards may also have a total cash withdrawal limit aswell, but that's separate to the daily limit and in place in case of negative balances.

And one final point... the cash interest rate usually applies to the cash advance fee aswell. So if the balance is £1100 in credit now, then don't withdraw the full £1100 as the fees for doing so will take it into a negative balance and therefore accrue interest.

If your friend goes down that route it's probably best to leave enough of a credit balance to cover the fees. Any small surplus can just be used up by making a regular purchase then clearing the next statement in full etc.
