I would say not to hire a car, as you won't get much further than Nottingham or Derby, and you are going to have to pay for parking etc. The only time I would say to hire a car is if you wanted to go off into the countryside, but I'm afraid I can't advise on that ... I get bitten just stepping outside in the fresh air! ;)

What time is your flight back? I'm thinking of doing the opposite and having a day trip to Belfast. Was over there for work a few years back (stayed at the Radisson) and loved it! x

Have a look here for the Skylink bus to Nottingham, takes 45 minutes and costs £5.00 return. drops off at Friar Lane right in the City Centre, you can arrange to meet your frind at Costa or Starbucks right on the corner of the Market square which is just next to where the bus drops you off.
I went to Derby once but the wheels of my bike got caught in the cattle grid:rotfl:
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

as others have said, get the skylink and go to nottingham. plenty to do there and the "run" to the bus stop is minimal as its only 100ft from the airport terminal exit.

dont get a car unless you plan on going to the middle of nowhere (kegworth, breedon on the hill, castle donington, etc). theres plenty of nice places to go, but for shopping they will be lacking a tad :)
  • dmg24 -Thanks again for your advice. Our flight leaves EMA @ 6.45pm and into Belfast an hour later. If you are coming to Belfast for shopping etc make sure you fly into the George Best Belfast City airport-airport code BHD (aka the city airport, the harbour airport by us locals) It's only a 10 min bus ride into Belfast city centre. The other airport is Belfast International Airport and it's in the middle of nowhere and a good 45 mins by bus into Belfast.
stoneman & noname123 thanks for the Skylink link.

Don't bother going anywhere, East Midlands Airport is itself one huge shop these days, fine as long as you don't actually want to sit down anywhere.

I'm assuming that you don't get out much Inactive? ;) There are very few shops at EMA compared to most airports.
