Gubbed Hard disk - how do I know?

Computer making terrible noise on start up - now nothing on screen - it is bumping and grinding noise - Is my Hard Disk gubbed?

If you can access the net then download the Drive fitness test from Hitachi as this link ( also works on other makes ).
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
Save to disk and start the faulty comp with that disk installed. Will test the drive and reveal probem. Must say it sounds bad. Only other possibility I can think of is that a fan has failed and cooked the processorqui tacet consentire -
