Hi everyone. Iv'e been meaning to ask this for weeks and keep forgetting :D

As title says really, how or where should I store apples to stop them going wrinkly?

Before we moved house I put them in the bottom compartment of the fridge and I could easily leave them there for weeks at a time and they were still lovely and smooth with firm flesh when we wanted one.
Since we have moved I still store them the same way, in the bottom compartment of the fridge but now they don't last even 2 weeks before the skin goes all wrinkly and the flesh goes very soft.

The only difference is the fridge they are now stored in. We didn't bring our fridge with us as it was an undercounter one and there was an undercounter one here too.
Surely fridges aren't that different that apples keep in one but not in another??
I have checked the temp and its the same as we used to have it set to at the old house.

Will they keep any better in a fruit bowl on the counter? (I know, I know, that's the most obvious thing to try but I just forget to do it and they go straight in the fridge on a friday night :D )

Thanks all for your advice......even if it is to call me a numpty for not trying the fruit bowl idea :rotfl:

Can you not just buy enough apples each week and eat them fresh

I'll add this to the existing thread on storing apples, with more suggestions :D

They keep better in a plastic bag or box in the fridge. In a fruit bowl they will wilt sooner. You can also get special matting from Lakeland to keep in the salad drawer that some people reckon helps to keep them fresh.

Different varieties have different keeping qualities and I find that apples I buy from our local greengrocer out of season don't keep as long as ones from the supermarket, chosen for their ability to survive travel and handling. However I don't buy apples from South America because apart from the air miles I can't be sure they haven't sprayed them with a substance banned in other parts of the world.

For the first time in my life I recently looked at apples in Somerfield, priced at almost 80p a pound and thought no way! They never taste as good as those fresh from the tree. I'd rather eat something else until our local apples come into season, which they have done now. We stripped our tree this week, giving some away, part cooking and freezing some and keeping some to eat raw.

What do you think I do.....buy dozens knowing that they will go funny?***:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I only buy enough for the week but sometimes one or two get left over for the next week. By the time we want them they are wrinkly and I hate even throwing away one or two apples.

***that comment was a joke btw before anyone jumps on me for being sarcastic :D
