Eligibility for legal aid?

Hi I wonder if anyone can help. I have been searching on the net and phoned a couple of places but cannot get a clear answer of what the earnings limit for public funding is? I am entitled now, as am temporarily on Income Support. When I was on Maternity Allowance my Solicitor said I wasn't entitled to Legal Aid and has now sent me a bill for £2,000! Obviously I can't afford this and am wondering if he advised me wrong initially? I have found that the disposable limit is £798 a month, but that there is an allowance for children, I don't know what this is though.
My soon to be ex-husband reckons he has legal aid, he is a self-employed builder! Yet on Mat Allowance with 2 kids I am supposed to find £2,000!!! I have since changed Solicitors as they were not the most efficient firm!
I did find the legal aid calculator which said I should have been entitled but when I spoke to the adviser on the phone they said not. Don't know what to do next.

On page 3-4 of the key card below are the deductions you make when assessing eligibility. You deduct 228.52 for each child. The disposable income limit is £698 now.
