Whats the best way to gain my CeMap qualifications?

Options
Hi, hopefully this is the right section to post in.

I've been offered to go for an interview as a trainee mortgage advisor but I need to have at least CeMap 1.

So i was wondering what the best way was to do it, doing some research there’s not many places who want to give you just cemap 1 and want to try and sell 1, 2 and 3 all together, doing it that way will cost me +£1000.

Ideally I was wondering if i could buy in some material myself (from somewhere like ebay) and do all of the studying myself at home then just book the exams?

I'm also sceptical of the company as they say once I’ve got the qualifications they will set me up with the interviews and there then trying to sell me their training packages, so are they doing this to try and rope me in?

So basically my questions are;

Can I do just cemap 1 or is it worth doing all three?
Can i buy the materials myself and do all the studying myself then just book the exams?
Do i have to register with the fsa to do the exams, how much does it cost?
Where would i book the exams and how much do they cost?

Thanks very much in advance everyone

My wife took cemap 1 and passed, she refused my help!

She got books off ebay and then took exam off her own back.

The exam is computerised multiple choice and was held at the local driving centre where lerners sit their theory exam.

If you can pass cemap one in my opinion the others are easier as they are more mortgage specific where as the first exam covers evrything.

Thanks Druss, I think that’s going to be the best way, and by far the cheapest, I’m competent enough to do it off my own back, so I suppose it's just a case of finding the best material to buy and where I can sit my exam

You don't need books off ebay or anything of the sort. I believe you should get the study folder/learning manual as part of the exam entry fee, and that contains enough to pass.

You dont have to have anything else, but my wife found the past example exam papers helpful to get used to the lingo, and also the infamous double negative question.

if you are not going to advise, which is not the most aprropriate answer etc.

you used to be able to buy a cd rom with loads of mock exams on them and lets face it, there are only so many questions that can be asked about a subject so you may find that they come around again and again!

The cost is £135 per module which includes material and initial exam, the cd rom used to be about £100 (going back a few years though!)

I would say it's definitely worth studying for all 3 but nothing can be better than "on the job learning" and you would be getting paid......happy days

The recruitment agents seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel when they send non-cemap people to mortgage interviews.

To be able to take cemap you have to be registered with the IFS and buy their books and with it comes one exam as well. You can study by yourself and hopefully pass.

You can also buy past papers on Ebay. But due to a number of budget changes I would just buy the books directly from source. But to get an idea of Cemap 1 buy something from ebay. If you then realise its not for you, you did not waste a lot of money.

None of those I don't think.

The 3 modules you take are UK Financial Regulation, Mortgages and Assesment of Mortgage Advice Knowledge.

I am guessing that they go in that order as that is roughly how they looked when I did it but if you ring the IFS before registering then you will be sure and not waste your money.

Those are all advanced CeMAP modules.

Just give IFS a cal, they'll sort you out with CeMAP1 registration.
