Queen's Award for Voluntary Service - get an MBE for your organisation!
Nominations are now being invited for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, an award given annually on June 2nd (the anniversary of the Queen's Coronation) to voluntary groups in the UK. The award is the highest accolade that can be given to such groups and is equivalent to an MBE!
See the website - http://www.queensawardvoluntary.gov.uk/ for more info.
How do I know all this? Because my own volunteer group, the Freewheelers EVS blood bikes, have won the award this year. All 60 of us in the charity are thrilled by the award and this week are basking in the publicity we have gained as a result - being filmed for BBC local news and featuring in a number of local newspapers. Plus four of our members are going to Buckingham Palace in the summer having been invited to one of the Queen's garden parties. We are hoping that the publicity will bring us more volunteers (3 came forward on the 1st day) and more donations (none so far but we remain hopeful!) Some of our news coverage on the web includes:

A voluntary organisation cannot apply for the award, it has to be nominated, but members can provide assistance in completing the nomination form. Ideally someone who has benefited from your work should nominate you. Although the next award is a year away, get started on the nomination process now as it can take time to complete the forms before the closing date. After the closing date you won't hear anything for a while, but if you are lucky to be shortlisted you will be contacted and visited/interviewed by the High Sheriff / Lord Lieutenant of your area/county as part of the judging process. Good luck if you decide to go for it, the rewards are well worth it.

That's fantastic news Mike, and proof that the service Freewheelers and others like it offers really is valued extremely highly.
Congratulations again to all of you down there.0
