Student needing a credit card

in Credit cards
Currently, I need to pay a £160 deposit to work at a festival. This is due to the amount of people that say they are going to work at festivals but then get their free ticket to work there and then don't complete their shifts! However, I don't have a spare £160
The problem with waiting for a student overdraft from my HSBC current account is that I would have to wait for my A level results and then the Ucas letter which wont be until august! And festival work is before this! I haven't really got a family member to lend me the money and friends are in the same boat as me.
Is there a credit card I could sign to with less than 10% interest I would have to pay back or a higher interest credit card with say 3months at 0%. I have a regular income off two part time jobs so that it probably wouldn't be longer than a couple of months before I payed it back!
Also, I want to start my credit history so that if I do need a credit card for other purposes when I finish Uni, I will have a strong enough credit history to allow me cash flexibility. I have no problem with keeping on top of repayments but need this £160 soon!

I don't think you would qualify for any prime cards with 0% deals or low interest.
If you plan to pay back the £160 in 2-3 months time then go for Capital One Classic Card or other sub-prime cards (Vanquis, Aqua, Halifax One, Barclays Initial, Monument etc). As long as you pay back at least £30-40 a month, you shouldn't be charged too much interest.0 -
Do you have a good relationship with your bank? They might give you a credit card now and would almost certainly offer one once you have a student account.Do Something Amazing - Give Blood0

Just to add that if the people dealing with refunding deposits are quick about it you shouldn't have to pay any interest due to the interest free time.Do Something Amazing - Give Blood0

If you've got two jobs, couldn't you just save up the cash?
If not, your bank's probably the best place to ask - just ask them for a CC or overdraft - they should be able to see your wages going in each month. In that case, though, you'll probably just have to take the rate they give you and clear the £160 asap.0 -

I'm also starting Uni in a few months, but I actually managed to open a Student Bank account a month ago:D ! I'm with Barclays and I upgraded my young persons account to a Student account which included an automatic £200 interest free overdraft on account opening. I think the personal banker that upgraded my account was unaware that this account shouldn't have been opened so soon, because I went into another Branch and they told me that I had to wait till June to open a student account
! I brought in that UCAS letter they send you when you reply to all your offers, and I thought this was the letter all the student accounts banks mean, but I now know it wasn't! But if you need the money asap then it might just be worthwile to go to Barclays. I later applied for a Student Credit card from them to build up a credit rating after they waved them in my face when I was upgrading the account, but the application was denied anyway! I later went to check my experian report and found that my credit rating is 'extremely poor' due to all these loans I applied for, but there dosen't yet appear to have been a search by Barclaycard on my report, meaning that they may just have used my account history to assess my credit behaviour, or because I haven't actually started uni yet.. I've applied for a vanquis card though and hopefully I'll get it in a few days so I can start building my credit history..

Hi,
Im pretty much in the same boat as you lot.
I want to open a student account before I get my A level results and before I start uni in september. This because I am going to Vietnam for 6 weeks in at the start of july. I have managed to save a lot of money by working in my study leave, however I still think I am a little short on cash. I wanted a student account to overdraft a few hundred pounds, just incase its needed.
This is my question.
I applied direct to my uni and the course administrator said that she loved my portfolio and I had a place no matter what grades I recieve (unconditional offer), but on UCAS it says I have a conditional offer, granted I get two C grades. I am predicted two A grades anyway. This technicality can apparantly not be changed.
Could I go to a bank and show them a letter of acceptance direct from the uni even though UCAS says differently and plead my case?
Do you think it could work?
Also, when they ask why I need the money so urgently, do I say for my holiday or keep quiet?
PLEASE HELP!
