Please help me with my figures and usage

Worked out my usage and now i am really worried that we have made a hefty mistake :(

Could anyone help me analyse my figures

Npower Gas 8173ft over five months 2/2/08 -today standard tariff we have been paying £26 per month as we followed what the previous owner paid...now i am worried that based on that usage the actual cost per month could be about £46 a month !

EON electric , this seems a bit more close to the mark , used 1028 units form 2/02/08 to today as above with the gas , paying £31 a month , standard tariff

Am i right to think that when npower do bill us , which they havent yet and cant give any clue on the phone that its going to be much larger than we anticipated , and if so , how !! how can gas be so much more than electric when we have agas central heating not used in other than in winter and gas hobs but everything else is electric ?!?

Any help from you guys would be appreciated
Dan

Firstly 2/2/08 until today is 4 months!

What do you mean by 'NPower gas 8173ft?' Presumably kWh?

What price per kWh(including VAT) for tier1/tier2

The difficulty with NPower is they use 'sculpting' on their gas, so you pay for far more tier 1 units in the winter

    Hi Cardew
Thats the thing , Npower wont/cant tell us ANYTHIGN price wise because their compuerr wont `let` them !
They say because when we moved in our meter was 927 and as such stared at zero again they cant find out my cost !
See how confused i am i cant even work out my bloody costs ,if thast 4 months not 5 that makes my bill even more than £46 a month when the old boy before us was paying £26 and somehow not getting in debit
what on earth am i doing wrong:confused:

and yes , my meter is in feet cardew

You can't work out an average monthly cost of gas for a year, on the consumption during 4 months from Early Feb to Early June.

Having now seen your other post I can see that the 8173ft was a typing error and you meant 8173kWh.

Firstly you will be using gas at a higher rate in that 4 months than the rest of the year. i.e. 8173kWh for 4 months does not indicate an annual consumtion 3 times greater(24,519kWh)

Secondly with NPower's peculiar system of Sculpting you pay for far more tier1(primary) units in the winter months than summer. So for example 1,000kWh consumed in February might cost you, say, double the cost of 1,000kWh consumed in July.

For you to get a good indication of your average monthly spend, you really need to know(or accurately estimate) your annual consumption in kWh.

Will try to help but there are so many things that we do not know.

I presume as you were new to npower they put you on the standard tariff, I do not know where you live so I will use the tariff for my region which is 7.022p for the first units and 2.09p for the remainder. I also do not know if you are being "sculpted" but according to my figures for these months there is not much difference between that and the flat figures.

You have used 8173kwh of which approx 1469 will be at the high rate of 7.022 which equals £103. The remainder,6704, will be at 2.09p which equals £140. Total for 4 months £243. Look on the npower website to get the standard tariff costs for your region and substitute them in above sums.

If you are sculpted you will pay more high units in Feb, fewer in March and April and hardly any in May.If you are not being sculpted the flat rate figure for the high units for 4 months will be 1524.

You cannot take the £243 and divide by 4 to get your monthly DD figure because these 4 months include some winter ones, you will use less in the summer.

I don't understand what you are saying about the meter reading 927 when you moved in and being reset to zero.

They say because the reading i gave them was 0927 it has rolled past 0000 and upwards again and so they cant work out my bill amount or usage and now will just have to await my bill !
    great stuff , thanks npower
So i have paid 3 x £26 because they failed to take march payment , so i face owing them £165 in debit when my bill comes along , allgedly on the 6th June
I can see how easy it is to get into serious debt with these people if you cant even see your balance progressivly
    Thanks both

Start putting an extra bit aside into a savings account now to cover what you are using.
Take and record regular readings, to make sure you have enough set aside.
Wait for them to bill you.
The meter going round the clock shouldn't be an issue at all, so it might be something else.
If they don't bill you for more than 12 months, then you only have to pay for the last 12 months of this, and they must include all your DD payments as credits, so if they really mess up you might win.
