backing up help

hi

i have read through some posts on backing up but still need a little help please.

i want to make a copy of my internet explorer favourites folder, all the e-mails in my hotmail account and some files from my documents etc

what is the easiest way to do this? i cant seem to locate some of the files on my pc?! (internet explorer favourites? any idea's were this is?!)

im running windows XP but i dont have the back-up program installed.

can i just buy a blank cd and copy the files over that way?

thanks

The e-mails in your hotmail account aren't stored on your computer, they are stored on Microsoft's Hotmail mail servers. You'd either have to open each message and save it to your hard disc, or forward the messages to an account you check on your PC with outlook to have a copy of the messages on your system. (*this assumes you use hotmail in the standard web manner and not via IMAP to Outlook/Outlook Express, which works in a different way).

Your Favourites will be in: C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name\Favorites

You can just copy to a blank CD/DVD, but you can also use a raft of different backup programs such as Acronis True Image, Retrospect, or the great and free on-line backup tool from Mozy which backs up your files to a remote backup server.

    thanks isofa

ive located the favourites file no problem!!

i guess il have to pick out the important e-mails and cut and paste the info out.

are all the programs u mentioned free? i dont want to use mozy, as i dont want my files backed up on a server...just for my own records really.

    thanks for your help,
