Changing format from WMP

Thanks to the peeps on this forum, I managed to download a video clip onto a DVD successfully, but it can only be played through WMP.
Is it possible to change the format from something able to play on WMP, so it can be played on other peoples' DVD players rather than them having to use their computer to watch it ?
I have Windows XP, Nero, DVD RW

What's the file extension ? Is it MPG or WMV ?
Either which way, the best site for video conversion information is the uber-fantastico Video Help (or whatever they're called nowadays)0
