Raked lawn - now what?

Having given my lawn a good raking the other day I'm now wondering what to do next. It's look very sorry for itself now! Even though it's had some heavy rain on it since.

How long should I leave it before cutting again? Does it need to recuperate a little first? Should I put any seed on the barer patches?

I've been impressed by the results of lawn sand recently. Really seemed to help the bare patches get going after scarifying.

Can it be put on by hand or do I need a wheeled "distributor" ?(IYKWIM:o )

Either by hand with gloves or using a "wheeled distributor" (as good a name as any) but the latter is much easier as it's heavy and you need to use quite alot.

If you do sow by hand, spread one layer of seeds in one direction and then another layer at right angles to the first. Then rake the seed into the soil lightly.

Grab deckchair, beer and newspaper or good book....
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I was under the impression that lawn care went in the order of:
lawn sand to kill the moss
Rake when the moss dies wait a little while for lawn to recover, cut as normal on the next setting up on mower, make sure that it is well watered to assist growth.
then add a general lawn fertiliser in between times.

You're absolutely right tillytomcat, that's the right way to do it.

    Also agree ...
Should I put any seed on the barer patches?

But then apply the seed to the bare patches exactly as coz800 has suggested.

But don't ignore this at any of those stages - it has a lot to commend it!
Call it the "letting the grass grow under your feet" stage.

not sure if this will help but I read in a magazine last weekend (it was a column by carol klein from gardener's world) that if you are using grass seed at this time of year it helps it to germinate if you put it in the fridge first (but I can't remember how long it should stay in there before sowing).
