I've just done a system scan to see what RAM I have so I can increase it. It says that I have 4 ports. 2 with 256 in and 2 available. I can then purchase 2 x 1GB which will give my computer 2.5GB of RAM. Is this fine to do???

Probably. Depends on the RAM type and motherboard. Do you know these details?0 -
I used www.crucial.com and it gave me the information I needed but it is wrote down at home. It told me what I have and what availability I have and it gave me 4 recomendations of what to upgrade with. I was told by a friend of mine that this is a very reliable site to use. If anyone knows better please let me know...0

You can't go wrong with Crucial, if that's what is says, you'll be fine, especially as they offer a money back guarantee...
If may show what type of motherboard you have, some will require matching pairs, some all matching, others it won't matter.0 -
As long as you stick with pairs all is well. Most, if not all, motherboards have colour coded slots for RAM. As long as you put the 2 256MB sticks in one colour and the 2 1GB in the other all will be fine.0

Don't just buy memory from the cheapest supplier on eBay because chances are that it won't work. Be very careful about high density and low density memory - high density won't work in most older (even a few years old) PCs but it's cheaper to make and it's what the cheapo eBay merchants sell.0
