Html

Hi,

For a long time I have been wanting to learn HTML, and a few weeks ago I did the learn HTML packages. However, I was wondering how you learn the advanced HTML that actual websites are made from as I want to start creating websites.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Jonathan

When you say advanced html, do you just mean:

    a) in terms of complex layouts (design orientated)?

    b) or in terms of scripting, ie processes that occur in the background (server-side), such as this reply being submitted to the database when I click the button below?

Whether it's html or scripting you want to learn, either way find a project to give you focus/something to aim for. And that's within your capability, like a personal website.

Books are always good, but you'll find Google and a decent text editor like TextPad to be your best friends.

  • http://www.w3schools.com/ is a good site for learning the basics of HTML and creating modern CSS sites.
  • htmlgoodies.com is pretty useful and my cheeky tip is to 'steal' what else you like. If you see something on a site that you like the look of, right click, view source, copy and paste it into a document of your own and find the html for whatever it is you liked the look of.

He does have a good point though. It is a good way of learning by trying to mimic designs you like. Innovation can often come from re-inventing something.

    i'll explain it slowly.

if you like the was text is scrolling across the screen, view the source and see how they did it.
If you like something else they've gone on the site, or they've got a table in there and you don't know how to do it then view the source and find the code for the table. I didn't say to copy the entire site, just the parts you like.

No now dont get upset :rotfl:

If you pinch stuff theres copyright infringement to consider
and the happiness of creating something unique.
  • nah mate, not talking about stealing their content just the HTML for something you're not sure how to do. Beats fannying about looking through books and websites to try and find the code for something.
  • Yeah but to learn it is so satisfying when I got my NCFE and C&G III
I was over the moon and now can code until my eyes look like ive
    been peeling onions all week.
