We had a token meter and decided to have it removed and a ordinary meter fitted instead,we had our first bill in and it was a staggering £353.12 i nearly fainted i got onto N Power and asked why the bill was so high and was told that £149.00 was added from our last bill as our token meter tariff was not set at the right rate. Then the lady from NPower said but they not allowed to do that they can only charge you £70.00.
To cut a long story short N Power said we have to pay as its right, this has taken 3 months to sort out and our next bill is already in and now its £533.89,what i want to know before i pay this bill is are they supposed to only be able to charge the £70.00 like the girl said as it was their fault the meter was set wrong and not ours...thanks.

Bad news - legally, yes they can ask you for the full amount. They will have informed you of new tariffs when they changed, and they may have tried to change the prices on the meter, but if the meter is inside it becomes more difficult.
Not so bad news - many people have negotiated a reduction for this, so give it a go.

(Not all the companies do this - 3 will write off the difference)
