    do you have more than one pc? or do you use a games console online?

    If not it may not be worth the money buying one, possible just wait untill your broadband contract is up and see if they will give you a free one. Most do.

    First as said, do you wish to:

    Connect a games console
    Connect another PC
    Use a computer wirelessly

    If you answered NO, its not worth getting a router, if you answered yes to any of the above then yes you should get a router, you can get a cheap £20 router, yes it will do the job, but wireless will probs be slower and the range may not be that great or you can get a top of the range one such as the one i jusr got for £100 which includes the highest speed possable at the moment ( N1 )

    We are also going to need to know who provides your internet, is it Virign Media or someone else as their are 2 types of routers, one for cable modems such as Virgin Media, or ADSL routers that people like BT, Sky, Orange use.

    Routers in general are better and "more secure" because rather than connecting directly to your PC like a "modem", they connect via a network connection, and run a translation which is a bit technical to get into here!

    If you have cable, you need a Cable Router, if you have ADSL (i.e. broadband via your BT 'phone line) you need an ADSL router. These are two different types and not interchangeable with each one.

    I'd suggest you check with your ISP to see if they recommend any first. Because there are many makes, and some ISPs specifically advise against using some (e.g. Zen prefer the SpeedTouch routers because they are more stable with their connection - this is due to different types of chipsets some can cause problems on BT ADSL lines, this is again a bit technical for this thread though!

    You can get a good range and prices from www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk

    You don't need to spend £100 on an N rated router! Have a look at;
