Anti Spyware question

I've been using AVG anti spyware for a while now, no problem at all. I use version 7.5, now AVG have released version 8 and the site states updates will soon be discontinued.

I know there's a free download of version 8, but it seems to be both anti spy ware and anti virus. I did download the update but it wanted to uninstall my anti virus before it would instal. I'm happy with Nod32 so I'm not uninstalling that in favour of AVG,

So, my question is, is there is a download of just the AVG anti spyware 8, without the Anti Virus? And I just can't find it.

If not, what other Anti Spy ware is recommended? I've searched the forums and most recommend AVG, hence me asking starting a thread, since that doesn't seem to be an option for me any more.

You could try superantispyware, they always recommend it on the digital spy board. Ive got it and it seems quite good! Its also a good idea to have spyware blaster

The standard advice used to be Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy, but the world has moved on and they don't always come out well in surveys of anti-spyware software.

Spyware Doctor has a good reputation and you can get a free basic version as part of Google Pack. Be careful only to select the programs that you really want.

Anti-spyware software is something of a minefield as many programs that look legitimate are themselves spyware. You can find a list of good and bad guys here.

You can have more than one anti-spyware program but not more than one anti-virus. Obviously this creates problems when the two are combined.

Thanks for the replies. I always used AdAware and AVG, so I'll download superantispyware, spybot and spyware doctor, give them all a look, then decide which to keep.

    Thanks.

  • Personally I use spybot-search and destroy. It catches quite a lot of tracker cookies(typically advertising).
There is one warning though. Do not install TeaTimer. All it seems to do is hog system resources for no benefit to you.

Also it has just the right level of user input for my liking. When my homepage, startup menu or something similar changes it asks if I wanted to do that.

I have to have that bit of input, it just makes me feel more secure.

Keep them all. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses and one will find stuff that another misses.
